Saturday Night Live will always have a special place in my heart, when me and the family use to get together in our London house we will watch the skits .
And not the current ones I mean the classic tapings the ones with legends like Dan Aykroyd John Belushi and the one and only Gilda Radner.
She always captivated with her ability to nail the news anchor roles and rip into herself through her comedy ,which was a novelty those days as woman comics were rare.
How I feel sad is that cancer snuffed this bright light out way before her time at the ripe young age of 42.
Her case educated me about the girl who cried wolf.
Because Gilda had a tendency allegedly to diagnose herself and over worry about her health, when she was actually having symptoms of ovarian cancer like pain down under she still got ignored and when she finally got diagnosed.
She got the chemo her body responded well and she was giving the all clear ,but as fate will have it the cancer returned more aggressive and she died soon later with her doting husband fellow actor Gene Wilder by her side.
And I think her hypochondriac behaviour boils down to her dad dying of a tumor and being afraid of having that same fate.
She made me realise comedians could be the most depressing people, because at the same time she spent her carer making jibes, but secretly she always felt the joke was on her she had body issues like bulimia, her dad’s death, miscarriages and to me never feeling truly accepted in the industry she seemed to be reigning in.
Check her book It’s always something” truly does some up her all her hidden anguish in the style that endeared her to so many fans worldwide.
I always feel she got the short end of the stick because that time the medics didn’t realise several people in her family were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, so maybe if they did that check they would have known she was at higher risk of developing the cancer due to her family history.
Maybe she would have been alive today.
We will never know, but I definitely believe there were some failures.
But women ovarian cancer is a cancer which can be treated if caught early, so if you display the symptoms like fatigue ,weight loss, back pain and a frequency to urinate go get medical help.
Always stay alert in regards to your health. Don’t be embarrassed to go to seek help, as your willingness for results could be the difference between life and death.
Gilda died young but she achieved so much in her short life, and I definitely know she played a key part in inspiring the new crop of female comedic talent we have today.
