I’m so sad to hear the legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu passed away at 72.
I know her death is being felt worldwide she was a icon she trailblazed nigerian music and was a activist who wasn’t afraid to speak up for those who can’t speak up for themselves.
And her music was a testament to that fact.
My memory of her was when she was a judge on Nigerian Xfactor.
I wish she did more seasons you could tell the contestants look up to her and respected her vast knowledge of the cut -throat music industry.
Why her death really hits home for me.
Just like her death of dying at a friend’s party.
My white neighbour who was so sweet to me growing up was a home-body and the only time I saw her go out was for shopping at the local supermarket.
But the day she went out to a party she was a bit frail so her knees gave out and she fell on the stairs and hit her head and never regained consciousness.
Her death hit me like a ton of bricks she was always there for me and my family and never looked at skin colour she was kind to everybody.
For years even till now I always wish she never went to that party as maybe she would still be alive you never know, so the great Onyeka’s death really brings back those bad memories and makes me think they were similar as Onyeka too wasn’t tribal.
Which to me is why all Nigerians will feel this devastating loss. What I will say everybody enjoy your loved ones and make the most of your life as unfortunately you ever know when it’s your time to go.
