I know its a common practice to say don’t break a leg in theatre .
But why are so many people truly ready to literally not figuratively do that to Francesca Amewudah-Rivers.
I’m shocked at reading the level of abuse that she has received since taking part as the female lead in West End Romeo and Juliet.
I want to know she still hasn’t had a national tv interview to explain what she is going through ,especially since she in a vulnerable demographic being black and a woman.
I think many black British would have appreciated her point of view.
But am happy if other people are ignoring the scale of this issue at least others know the danger including the over 800 Black women and non-binary actors that have signed an open letter condemning the online racial abuse of Francesca Amewudah-Rivers.
Racism and bigotry like this will make BAME community not feel that theatre truly is home for their talent .
I truly wonder that why can’t the classics be modernised or reworked if it works in Broadway why not here, and is it a sign that black and period era don’t mix.
I just hope the recent production issues don’t derail the show as I know a lot of people would love to come in person and show their support for this young up-coming actress.
Nobody deserves abuse doing a job they love and most importantly are qualified to do.
