Gia Carangi was one of the first supermodels in the world and wow was she a beauty, but sadly that beauty didn’t spill into her real life frankly she had an ugly existence which eventually consumed her.
Gia was discovered at a young age and her career skyrocketed soon after she practically lived on the front covers during the 80s, but as quickly as she rose so was the fall.
She had a troubled home life and due to her parent’s split she allegedly always sought attention and approval from others.
And was known to exaggerated certain aspects of her life.
It was as if she desperately wanted to run from her demons so then found comfort in hard drugs.
She became so addicted she refused to come to shoots or if she was present she was clearly intoxicated.
And what saddened me is one remark from a photographer the camera never lies and that magic that once made her a star was gone as her eyes started to appear vacant in photos.
Due to that she got sacked from her agency, then started doing odd jobs liek sandwich shop and soon prostitution.
But sadly her life took another sad turn she found out she had Aids.
And due to the fear of the disease was kicked out of a family’s home, and had to couch surf, then sadly died from the disease.
And what was sad no-one from the industry she loved was present at her funeral as her family didn’t want anyone to know what killed her.
How tragic is that.
I take away from this story that divorce can affect people no matter how old or successful they become that pain of separation can always linger and can be catalyst for a person’s self destruction.
I truly I’m happy about the progress of Aids medication and how attitudes have changed towards the sufferers , and truly wish people surround themselves with good influences not yes men who will be willing to watch a person’s downfall instead of helping them back on their feet.
Just sad her story became a forgotten tale in fashion archive.
